Certificates
FAU instructors have the opportunity to earn a certified qualification in university teaching. This certificate serves as formal proof of pedagogical and didactic competency, particularly valuable in the context of job applications, habilitation, and appointment procedures.
The Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities is standardized across Bavaria and aligned with the quality criteria of the German Association for Higher Education Didactics (dghd). All courses offered through the Bavarian network ProfiLehrePlus are fully recognized toward the certificate. External qualifications from other providers may be accepted upon review. Please check which achievements are required for each certificate level and hot wo apply.
Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities
To obtain the “Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities – Basic Level” you must provide proof of at least 60 work units (=Arbeitseinheiten, AE) in the following areas:

- In-person Seminar or Blended Learning-Course Grundlagen der Hochschuldidaktik or

To obtain the “Certificate in University Teaching of the Bavarian Universities – Advanced Level” you must provide proof of at least 120 AE in the folloing areas:

The “Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities – Specialization Level” will be issued once you have obtained the Advanced Level Certificate (120 AE) and sucessfully completed the Specialization Level program:

Subject-, Topic- und Target Group-Specific Certificates
Persons who open the habilitation procedure at FAU’s Faculty of Medicine must provide evidence of attendance of continuing education courses in higher education in the amount of 60 work units (AE) in the form of the Certificate in Medical Education Bavaria.
The Certificate in Medical Education Bavaria is obligatory for practicing medical doctors. Of the 60 prescribed study units (AE), at least 30 must deal with educational topics specific to medicine. The remaining units can be acquired in the area of general higher education teaching:
Habilitation students who are not practicing medical doctors (e.g., rer.nat.) may earn the Basic Level Certificate in University Teaching with 60 work units (AE) in general university didactics:

Work units acquired through DiL courses may be counted toward the Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities. Please note, however, that units awarded solely for the design of a digital teaching-learning unit are not eligible for recognition toward the certificate.
The thematic certificate “Inclusive Teaching in Higher Education” is designed to raise awareness among university instructors about the topic of “Studying with Disabilities” and to build confidence in supporting students with impairments in everyday teaching situations. During the seminars, participants explore a variety of strategies to help ensure that all students can access and participate fully in academic life. The certificate is offered by the University of Augsburg in cooperation with BayZiel and is open to all instructors at Bavarian universities.
The certificate consists of 40 work units (AE), which can be earned by attending topic-specific courses. Whether a seminar counts toward the certificate is indicated in the course description on ProfiLehrePlus website. For more information, please visit the University of Augsburg’s website.
Tutors at FAU have the opportunity to earn a university teaching certificate specifically esigned for their role. To obtain the certificate, participants must complete at least 30 work units (AE), structured as follows:

We follow the nationwide standards for training and certification in university didactics set by the Netzwerks Tutorienarbeit (German Network for Tutoring).
The FAU Certificate for Tutors can also be credited toward the Certificate in University Teaching of the Bavarian Universities — provided that participants continue to teach at FAU after completing their studies.
Certificate Application
Basic and Advanced Level
On the overview page of ProfiLehrePlus you can view a summary of the work units (AE) you have already completed. Simply click the button “Apply for certificate now”. We will review your request and contact you personally. Unless otherwise specified, the certificate will sent to you official university address.
The Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities is based on the quality standards for the recognition of achievements in higher education didactics established by the German Association for Higher education Didactics (dghd). Please make sure that you meet all mandatory requirements before submitting your application (see above).
The certificate is signed by Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger, President of FAU, and Prof. Dr. Andrea Bréard, Vice President for Education. Please note that therefore, the issuing process may take up to four weeks.
Specialization Level
The Specialization Level Certificate is automatically awarded upon successful completion of the advanced level. No separate application is required.

The certificates are issued twice a year and are signed by the Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts.
Recognition of External Qualifications
External training provided by other insitutions may be recognized for the Certificate in University Teaching of the Bavarian Universities – Basic or Advanced Level, provided the following criteria are met:
- The course must have a clear focus on higher education didactics.
- The course must be asignable to one of our four certificate areas.
- The duration, institution, and trainer(s) must be documented via a certificate of participation.
- Only training courses completed within the last six years are eligible.
- Only professional development activities can be recognized — no academic coursework or self-taught seminars.
Recognition is based in the Quality Standards for the Recognition of Achievements in Higher Education Didactics of the German Association for Higher Education Didactics (dghd). Further details on these quality standards can be found here.
A maximum of 10% of the required work units (WU) for the certificate may be covered by external training.
Example: For the Basic Level Certificate (60 WU in total), up to 6 WU from external activities may be recognized.
External courses or seminars completed at other higher education didactics institutions can be submitted for review in our course management system ProfiLehrePlus, if you would like them to be counted toward the Certificate in University Teaching of the Bavarian Universities.
- If you haven’t already done so, please create a user account at www.profilehreplus.de.
- In the right-hand menu, click on “My ProfiLehrePlus”, then select “Attended Seminars.”
- Click on “Add seminar manually.” A new window will open.
Enter the seminar details and select FAU Competence Center Education as the reviewing coordinator. Then close the window. - Upload a scanned copy of your certificate of participation and click the button “Request confirmation.”
