But how exactly are students and lecturers using AI? What opportunities do they see, and where do they perceive challenges and uncertainties? To explore these questions, FAU Lehre conducted a university-wide survey as part of the KI-KOMP project (AI Competencies in Digital Education).

Between December 2025 and February 2026, 146 lecturers and 122 students participated in the survey. We would like to sincerely thank everyone who took the time to share their experiences, perspectives, and ideas.

Key Findings at a Glance

The results clearly show that AI has already become an integral part of teaching and learning at FAU.

72% of students and 59% of lecturers already use AI applications.

ChatGPT is by far the most widely used AI tool among both groups.

68% of lecturers see potential for improving their teaching through AI.

70% of students believe that AI can support their learning.

At the same time, the survey reveals a strong awareness of risks and challenges. Lecturers are particularly concerned about ethical and societal implications, with 84% expressing such concerns. Students also identified risks including loss of competencies, superficial learning, misinformation, dependence on AI systems, and fairness issues in assessments.

One particularly interesting finding is the perception gap between lecturers and students. While many lecturers believe that AI enhances their teaching, only a relatively small proportion of students experience AI use in courses as genuinely beneficial for their learning. This suggests that effective pedagogical integration of AI still has significant room for development.

Another important finding concerns institutional guidance and support:

67% of students are unaware of FAU’s AI-related support and service offerings.

Only 29% are familiar with FAU’s Guidelines for AI in Teaching.

The guidelines themselves are generally viewed positively by lecturers. However, they would welcome more concrete guidance, particularly regarding assessments, transparency requirements, documentation of AI use, and the evaluation of independent student work.

Full Results

The detailed survey report will soon be published on the FAU Lehre website “AI in Teaching”. In addition to the full evaluation, the website provides information on support services, professional development opportunities, and examples of good practice.

What Could Come Next?

The survey provides valuable insights into the future development of AI in teaching and learning at FAU. Based on the findings, existing training and advisory services for lecturers could be expanded, the visibility of current support structures could be increased, and AI competencies could be more systematically integrated into teaching and learning.

Additional opportunities might include new networking and exchange formats, further development of the AI guidelines through practical examples, enhanced support for designing assessments, and stronger integration of AI into existing teaching and learning environments.

University-wide initiatives to promote AI literacy among students, as well as experimental formats such as an AI Lab for Teaching and Learning, could also offer exciting perspectives for the years ahead.

The survey highlights one key message: the question is no longer whether AI will be used in higher education, but how its use can be shaped in ways that are effective for learning, responsible, and future-oriented. We look forward to continuing this conversation together with you.

This article was linguistically refined with the support of AI but humans remain responsible for its content. 😉

AI in Teaching at FAU: High Adoption, Great Expectations, and a Need for Guidance Generative AI has firmly established itself in everyday life at FAU.
