Generative AI is already changing how we teach, learn, assess, conduct research and collaborate in higher education. You might be asking how these tools can be used in ways that are pedagogically meaningful, ethically responsible and institutionally appropriate.
The TaLAI online course offers a practical and reflective starting point for these questions. Developed as part of the Erasmus+ funded project TaLAI: Teaching and Learning with Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education, the course supports higher education educators in engaging critically and confidently with GenAI.
The course is free to access and available in English:

TaLAI’s distinctive approach combines pedagogical design, ethical reflection and hands-on experimentation. It invites you to consider the impact of GenAI on learning, assessment, curriculum design, knowledge practices and institutional responsibility. You will explore examples of AI-supported teaching and learning, experiment with prompting strategies, reflect on the use of custom AI assistants, and critically examine current issues such as GenAI detection tools, institutional AI policies and emerging regulatory frameworks including the EU AI Act.
The course is organised around the ADDIE model: Analyse, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate. This structure is intended to encourage critical consideration of how generative AI (GenAI) can be meaningfully aligned with learning objectives, teaching activities, assessment practices and institutional expectations. It also aims to support informed judgement. In which situations can GenAI enrich teaching and learning? When might its use be problematic? What should remain human-centred? What ethical, social, and environmental risks need to be considered?
The course is currently being piloted. Anyone interested in providing feedback is warmly invited to contact Dr. Tanja Tillmanns (tanja.tillmanns@fau.de). You are also very welcome to simply explore the course directly and see how it might support your own teaching, assessment or institutional conversations around GenAI.
